Supervisor of Midwives

The purpose of midwifery supervision is to protect women and babies by actively promoting a safe standard of midwifery practice. All midwives are required to be supervised by a named Supervisor of Midwives (SoM).  SoMs are experienced midwives who undertake additional education and training.

A SoM offers guidance and support to women and their families on care choices, communication issues or concerns about care. The SoM acts as a positive role model for midwives, giving professional leadership and support. They also provide advice and guidance on practice issues and further development of skills and knowledge.

Supervisors of Midwives can help you by:-

  • Listening and being your advocate on the concerns you may have about your care
  • Supporting and advising you about care choices for example over your plan of care and place of birth
  • Creating an open environment for communication between you and your midwife or other care givers

Within the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, there are a team of supervisors who can be contacted at any time via the maternity unit.

Contact: 028 9063 2150 and ask for the on-call Supervisor of Midwives.
